Satinder Satti – Ambassador Of Punjabi Culture

SOMETIMES, the longest journeys are the ones that take you back
home … Satinder Satti is on one such journey, choosing the road less travelled
to ‘showcase’ the real face of her land and roots, Punjab, to the entire world.
The versatile and multi-faceted Satinder, has been on a mission to preserve
and propagate Punjabi language and Punjab’s unique art, heritage, culture,
music, literature, ethos … and is perpetuating the cause with artistic and
creative endeavours that involve the people of Punjab and tell their stories,
dreams, aspirations and hopes.

Poet, singer, actor, anchor, activist … Satinder’s personality and being has
many dimensions, with the direction of her large body of work over the last
many decades being focused on giving the ‘maa bali’ Punjabi, a new lease of
life, evoking and invoking a sense of pride of being a Punjabi and reviving
many of the state’s lost art forms and music. It’s been an effort that Satinder
has continued relentlessly against all odds, and with the true Punjabi spirit,
she so loves, respects and promotes. The beautiful and talented Satinder
began her journey on a theatre stage and won the best actress awards for the
one-act play, ‘Mitti Da Mull’ at a competition in Jammu & Kashmir in 1992,
followed by the best actress honour for the play ‘Chi rea’ as part of a youth
festival in G.N.D.U in 1993. And like they say, the rest is history, as Satinder
discovered her natural ease with people and her ability to strike a chord with
them through her path-breaking television and stage shows, poetry that
speaks of her beautiful land and what now plagues it, a novel that explores
spiritual and eternal questions. For someone who grew up reading the rich
Punjabi literature and poetry of Punjab, writing is catharsis for Satinder. In the
field of music, Satinder has experimented with a repertoire of folk music, to
reach out to the younger generation of Punjab, and in an absorbing manner,
make them aware of the richness of this heritage.
Satinder is also dedicated towards bringing out the songs of Surinder Kaur,
with the soul-stirring lyrics, and notthe beats and tunes, being the foundation
of the project. Armed with a Master’s degree in Law, it was literature and
theatre that guided Satinder’s soul, her road ahead and a career that has
defied cliches. Satinder, with her magnetic personality, grace, dignity, has
consciously chosen works that reinforce her orientation and dedication
towards propagating Punjabi arts. For instance, ‘Pind Diyan Galiya’ a television
show for PTC USA, chronicled as many as 70 villages of Punjab, that are fast
merging into concrete cities. The show aimed at creating a library of database
on villages for posterity’s sake and also depicting where the real Punjab
breathes. Other shows like, Miss Zee Punjabi and Miss World Punjaban on Zee
TV, target the upliftment of girls from small towns by grooming their
language, mannerisms, dressing, which helps them gain confidence and find
a place in today’s competitive new world. Having performed stage shows
across the world, Satinder stands tall as the beacon of Punjabi heritage, to save
Punjabiyat from losing its integrity and face, in the name of modernization. In
the world of art and culture of the Punjabi Diaspora, Satinder occupies an
especial /position, with the accomplished singer, model, actor, dancer
connecting with audiences from various backgrounds and age groups.
Satinder has made a tremendous impact on the entertainment industry and her
contribution to it has been acknowledged with several awards and accolades, including a
gold medal by G.N.D.U for contribution to art and culture, ‘Punjab Di Dhee’ Award by the
ChiefMinisterofPunjab, Best multi-talented artist by PTC Music awards in 2004 .•.
Her three solo music albums, six single track songs, a poetry book and another novel, all
augur her intention towards Punjabi arts. Satinder is now exploring the medium of radio to
reach outtotheyoung ofPunjab.ln a unique format, one that doesn’t preach or lecture, and
after years of research, Satinder has conceptualized and created a series of shows based on
the lives and valour of Sikh warriors. Using the technique of story-telling, Satinder will take
the next generation of Punjabis back to their roots, inspiring them with the stories of their
lineage, rich legacy and history. Satinder believes the ‘real’ Punjabis will stand the test of
time.
The cause of the girl child is close to Satinder’s heart, and she has set up an NGO ‘Shelter’
that works for education ofgirlsand lends support to the underprivileged and unnoticed in
the interiors of Punjab. Satinder finds her strength and inspiration to explore, experiment
and create from the life of her people and the myriad colours of Punjab. Satinder has miles
to go and she believes the show must go on.
